Dr. Chambers is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, and Family and Preventative Medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, and co-Director of the Center for Better Beginnings. She is also Clinical Professor in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at UCSD, Vice Chair of Clinical Research in the UCSD Department of Pediatrics, Director of the UCSD CTRI Center for Life Course Research, and Director of Clinical Research at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego. Dr. Chambers is a perinatal epidemiologist specializing in the area of environmental causes of adverse pregnancy outcomes, birth defects, and childhood disabilities, with a special focus on human teratogens (environmental agents that cause birth defects or other adverse prenatal outcomes). She is currently conducting research on the prevention of alcohol related birth defects, the safety in pregnancy of several new medications used for the treatment of maternal health conditions, and the safety of vaccines during pregnancy. Dr. Chambers serves as an advisor to national and international organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Dr. Andrew McCulloch is the Shu Chien Chancellor's Endowed Chair in Engineering and Medicine at the University of California San Diego and Director of the Institute for Engineering in Medicine. He earned his bachelor (1981) and Ph.D. (1986) degrees in Engineering Science at the University of Auckland and joined the UC San Diego faculty in 1987. He directs the UCSD Interfaces Graduate Training Program and the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Specialization in Multi-Scale Biology. Dr. McCulloch served as Vice Chair of the Bioengineering Department from 2002 to 2005 and Chair from 2005 to 2008. He is also a member of Qualcomm Institute, the Center for Research on Biological Systems, and a Senior Fellow of the San Diego Supercomputer Center. Dr. McCulloch was educated at the University of Auckland, New Zealand in Engineering Science and Physiology receiving his Ph.D. in 1986. Dr. McCulloch was an NSF Presidential Young Investigator and is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and a Fellow of the Cardiovascular Section of the American Physiological Society. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Bio-Medical Engineering Society, and is currently Associate Editor of PLoS Computational Biology. He also serves on the Executive Council of the International Union of Physiological Sciences. Dr. McCulloch has published over 250 peer reviewed research article. His lab uses multi-scale engineering approaches to help understand, diagnose and treat heart diseases. They use experimental and computational models to investigate the relationships between the cellular and molecular structure of cardiac muscle and the electrical and mechanical function of the whole heart during ventricular remodeling, heart failure and arrhythmia. The lab is also developing new methods to generate patient-specific models for clinical use and has licensed technologies to startup companies.

Louise C. Laurent, MD, PhD, is a board-certified perinatologist who specializes in caring for women with high-risk pregnancies. Perinatologists, also known as maternal-fetal medicine specialists, care for pregnant women who have an increased chance that they or their babies will have health concerns. Dr. Laurent's expertise is in treating women who are at risk for preeclampsia or fetal growth restriction. Dr. Laurent is the director of perinatal research and a professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at UC San Diego School of Medicine. As a physician-scientist, her research uses stem cells to understand early development, including early placental development. She has led several National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded clinical trials that investigate extracellular RNA for predicting and diagnosing pregnancy-associated disorders, such as placental dysfunction. Dr. Laurent has co-authored book chapters, textbooks and many peer-reviewed articles, and her work has been published in Nature, The New England Journal of Medicine and Cell Stem Cell, among others. She completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Dr. Laurent earned her medical degree and doctoral degree in biochemistry from UC San Francisco. She is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal and fetal medicine. Dr. Laurent is a member of numerous professional societies, including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the Society for Gynecologic Investigation, the International Society for Stem Cell Research and the Perinatal Research Society.
