As College Librarian Gabriel is responsible for the management and development of the libraries which are at the heart of the college's academic life, including the College's outstanding Special Collections of manuscripts and rare books. The College Librarian is also responsible for ensuring that services to users are maintained and delivered. Gabriel was Assistant Director of Library Services (Special Collections) at the University of St Andrews before moving to Christ Church. At St Andrews she had responsibility for the management and strategic direction of the University's Special Collections of manuscript, archive, photographic and rare books. She has also worked as Head of Collections at Durham Cathedral, where she had oversight of the library collections, dating from the 6th century, and museum objects. She also worked at Lambeth Palace Library, where she had particular responsibility for reader services and all aspects of work relating to the Library's printed book collections, which includes a 1455 Gutenberg Bible, the earliest book printed in Europe using movable type. Gabriel holds an MA in Modern History from the University of Oxford and an MA in Library and Information Studies from University College London.

Harriet Burns

Harriet Burns is fast developing a reputation as a "polished, witty, expressive and sweet-toned" (The Times) performer both in recital and on stage. An acclaimed interpreter of song, Harriet has performed at the Wigmore Hall, Philharmonie Luxembourg, Oxford Lieder and Leeds Lieder Festivals, International Lied Festival Zeist, Ryedale Festival and de Singel with pianists including James Baillieu, Imogen Cooper, Christopher Glynn, Graham Johnson, Sholto Kynoch, Malcolm Martineau, Joseph Middleton and Ian Tindale. On the operatic stage, recent roles include Oriana (cover, Amadigi, Handel) and Sifare (cover, Mitridate, re di Ponto, Mozart) at Garsington Opera, King Harald's Saga (Judith Weir) for Waterperry Opera. With the Guildhall Opera she has performed the roles of Sister Grace (The Angel Esmeralda, Lliam Paterson), Nerina (La Fedeltà premiata, Haydn), and Aminta (Aminta e Fillide, Handel). Harriet is a laureate of numerous international competitions. Successes include 2nd prize and German Lied Award at 2022 Concours Musical International de Montréal (Art Song division). In 2019, she was awarded 2nd prize at the Wigmore Hall/Independent Opera International Song Competition, the Compulsory Song Prize and Recital Prize at the International Vocal Competition in 's-Hertogenbosch and 1st prize at the Maureen Lehane Vocal Awards at the Wigmore Hall. She is proud to be a City Music Foundation Artist, Samling Artist, Oxford Lieder Young Artist and a Britten-Pears Young Artist. Harriet was a member of the Guildhall Opera School where she graduated with Distinction on the Artist Diploma programme. Harriet is a member of staff in the Vocal Faculty at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she coaches English song and German Lieder, and has led projects for Voiceworks; Songs at Six including The Songs of Cheryl Frances-Hoad and Contemporary Collaborations. Harriet has also held a vocal residency at the Université de Montréal and McGill university, and is proud to teach the Girl Choristers of Christ Church Cathedral, Frideswide Voices.

Helen Parker

Helen Parker studied with a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music. She has worked as a soloist for conductors Richard Hickox and Sir Simon Rattle, with various orchestras and ensembles including The City of London Sinfonia, Northern Sinfonia, The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and The Academy of Ancient Music and groups such as The Tallis Scholars, The Gabrieli Consort, The English Concert and The King's Consort. Helen runs team building workshops and company singing ensembles in the corporate world and has been working with young voices for 18 years including currently teaching at New College School and Summer Fields Prep School. She is excited to be working with the girls at Frideswide Voices in this new period of their association at Christchurch.

Helen Smee

Helen is a freelance conductor, workshop leader, pianist and organist and works regularly with a broad range of choirs across the UK. She completed her MA at the Royal Academy of Music in Choral Conducting, studying with Patrick Russill. Having graduated in July 2013 with the Alan Kirby Prize, she held the Junior Fellowship of the Joyful Company of Singers until 2014, conducting the group in venues across London including St John's Smith Square. In November 2016, she was awarded the Licentiate of the Royal Academy (LRAM), specialising in teaching choral conducting. Helen has held positions with Highbury Youth Choir, Buckland and Betchworth Choral Society, and Highbury Opera Theatre. She has been an Assistant Conductor with the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and is Organist and Director of Music at St Mary Merton, SW19 where she trains the choir of boy and girl choristers. Helen is active as a freelance conductor, workshop leader, organist and accompanist across London and the south-east, and is the Artistic Director of the Voices of London Festival, a week-long festival of choral music held at St James' Sussex Gardens. In 2018 she won the Members' Award from Action for Children's Arts in recognition of her outreach work with young people. She took up the post of Director of Frideswide Voices in September 2019.

Janet Proudman

Janet Proudman is the Cathedral's Licensed Lay Minister. She was commissioned in this role in January 2018. She leads the day chaplaincy team, assists with pastoral work, and regularly leads worship.

Jim Godfrey

Jim Godfrey is one of the Cathedral Vergers and has worked at Christ Church since 1987. As well as his verging duties (which include the day-to-day running of the Cathedral), he is responsible for the training of the Cathedral Guides and regularly gives talks and tours on the history of Christ Church. He is the author of the current guidebook to the Cathedral.

I read Theology at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford; did my doctoral research in Oxford; spent two years at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, Paris; then returned to the UK to take up my first job as Lecturer in Theology at Hull University. After a year I was appointed Lecturer in the History and Theology of the Latin West at Durham University, where I remained for just over twenty-five years (I was appointed Professor in 2008) . I moved to Oxford in 2015.

Laura joined Christ Church in May 2022 as Senior Development Officer. Laura has worked in development and fundraising for the last 15 years both within higher education and the arts. Most recently Laura was Strategic Development Officer at Pembroke College and before that was Head of Business Development for the Corn Exchange, Newbury. Laura is also a trustee for Ark-T, an arts and mental health charity in Oxford.

I read Theology for my first degree, specialising on the Hebrew Bible but my other strengths include Ancient Greek and Latin patristic literature. In 2002-2003 I spent a year at Paideia, The European Institute for Jewish Studies in Sweden as a Martin Buber Fellow. In London I obtained a professional qualification in library studies (MA, Information Services Management). I hold a doctorate in Jewish Studies (UCL), specialising in medieval Ashkenazi Bibles. Research Interests My academic interests include Hebrew micrography and illuminated medieval Hebrew manuscripts, medieval Jewish history; codicology and palaeography and early printed Hebrew books. I have published in these areas, as well as translated fictional works from Hebrew.

As Deputy Librarian, Naomi is responsible for the day-to-day running of the working library and the Burn Law Library. If you have any questions about visiting these libraries, or using the modern collections, please address them to her. After completing her graduate traineeship at the Institute of Classical Studies - where she was happily involved in all aspects of library work, from shelving to acquisitions to processing - Naomi then worked at a corporate law library in London. She joined the Christ Church team in May 2022, where she's excited to combine her experience of both academic and legal libraries to ensure a quality service for all library users. Naomi holds an MA in Library and Information Studies from University College London, and a BA in Classics from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.

Sarah Coatsworth is a musician, teacher and editor. After graduating from Selwyn College, Cambridge, she completed a PGCE in Durham and spent eight years leading music departments in secondary schools in London and West Sussex before moving back to her home city of Oxford. She now combines a busy private piano teaching practice with freelance editorial work. As an alto specialising in early music, Sarah has made several recordings of sacred sixteenth-century choral polyphony for Hyperion with the Brabant Ensemble, and now sings regularly at the church of St Mary Magdalen in Oxford. In her spare time, she enjoys playing chamber music (viola and viol), coastal walking and playing squash. Sarah is a keen supporter of choral opportunities for girls, and has been involved with Frideswide Voices from the beginning, first as a volunteer and parent, and now teaching music theory to the choristers.

Steven Grahl

Steven Grahl is a sought-after conductor and keyboard player. Alongside his role at Christ Church and in the Faculty of Music, he is Conductor of Schola Cantorum of Oxford. Steven served as Director of Music at Peterborough Cathedral from 2014-2018, where he was responsible for training the Cathedral Choir, and for the re-pitching of the Hill Organ. He has recently recorded a solo CD on this instrument. Peterborough Cathedral Choir's recording of Cheryl Frances Hoad's EvenYouSong, made under Steven's direction, was released to critical acclaim in December 2017. For seven years, Steven was Assistant Organist at New College, Oxford, and he combined this post with that of Organist and Director of Music at St Marylebone Parish Church, London. He has also been musical director of The Guildford Chamber Choir, Peterborough Choral Society, and The Stamford Chamber Orchestra. Recent conducting engagements include: Verdi Requiem with Peterborough Choral Society and Cathedral Choirs; Bach Magnificat and Handel Coronation Anthems with the Guildford Chamber Choir and Instruments of Time and Truth; and works by Escaich, Copland, Maw, and Whitacre with Cambridge University Symphony Chorus. Steven has worked with numerous other ensembles, including The English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble, Guildford Philharmonic, New London Chamber Choir, and Prime Brass. A prize-winning graduate of Magdalen College, Oxford, and the Royal Academy of Music, Steven gained the top prizes in the FRCO examination, and is also a holder of the Worshipful Company of Musicians' Silver Medallion. In 2010, he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM), an award offered to past students of the Academy who have distinguished themselves in the music profession and made a significant contribution to it in their particular field. Steven has twice held stipendiary lectureships in music at New College and is in demand as an organ and conducting tutor. He has been Chairman of the Association of Assistant Cathedral Organists, and has held a Junior Fellowship in Choral Direction at Birmingham Conservatoire. Steven was an interpretation finalist in the International Organ Competitions at St Albans (UK) in 2011, and in Dudelange (Luxembourg) in 2013, and has recently completed a two-year term as President of the Incorporated Association of Organists.
