- First Black Superintendent
The Portland Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously on September 20, 2022, to rename the Blanchard Education Service Center, the school district's current central office, in honor of Archon Matthew Prophet of Portland, Oregon's Delta Phi Boulé. Archon Prophet, who was Portland's first Black superintendent of schools from 1982 to 1992, passed away in June 2022. Archon Prophet was a founding member of Delta Phi Boulé, with prior membership in Alpha Chi Boulé. The renaming was endorsed by many longtime educators, community members and elders who worked with and were inspired by Archon Prophet during and after his leadership tenure. The naming ensures that the current headquarters and any future school headquarters will bear Archon Prophet's name.
