A Legacy of Service

Corinne says Stanley volunteered at the Athletics facility anytime he was home from Iraq. An avid Cardinal fan, he was eager to get his foot in the door at UofL. Before his passing, Stanley was appointed Facility Operations Manager in Athletics. He handled facility and game operations for various sports facilities, as well as managed ACC and NCAA game day events.

Honoring Stanley

The cohort was shocked when Stanley passed during their program. Even within a virtual setting, he had touched their lives. To pay homage to their classmate and a larger-than-life presence, they established the Stanley Hall Character Endowment Award. "Once I heard of Stanley's passing, I knew that the cohort would want to do something to honor him," Brittany says. "Establishing an endowment is the opportunity for the following classes to learn about Stanley and the character that was instilled in him. We wanted to pass along that spirit and keep it alive in the OMBA program." The award will be given each year to an online MBA graduate who embodies Stanley's spirit. Stanley was known for being compassionate and giving; he was a comforting presence who always looked out for others. Award winners will exemplify these traits.

Katherine Haynes

Katherine Haynes started at the College of Business back in 2002. In her 18 years at UofL, she has worked under three deans (plus an interim dean), seen Frazier Hall expand to include an Equine and Entrepreneurship wing, and observed a myriad of programmatic shifts and changes consistent with a College growing and evolving to meet student needs. "I have met some of the most talented and sensitive faculty and staff at the College," says Katherine. "Some have passed on, but I will forever be grateful for having known them." Even as the College has adjusted to the Coronavirus pandemic, Katherine remains a fixture, be it in virtual meetings as a member of the Diversity and Inclusion committee or working remotely for the Accountancy office. Katherine's experience and compassion have resonated with students - many of whom see her as a mentor. This dedication to both her work and serving students earned Katherine the College of Business Staff Excellence Award (given to her in 2011 and again in 2018). We spoke to Katherine recently about her time at the College.

Michael McBride

Michael McBride is, as many accountants are, incredibly pragmatic. This year, Michael (pictured above on the far left) completed his Master of Accountancy degree at the College of Business. In the end, he achieved his goal. He couldn't be prouder. "I don't want to sugarcoat anything-the experience was definitely hard and a struggle at times. But I'm so proud I didn't give up. I accomplished all my goals while completing the program." These feelings are sure to resonate with many of us. Michael was one of many who looked upon the pandemic as an opportunity to invest in himself. He was ahead of the curve on remote work, as his career had begun with London-based tech company GSMA after receiving his BA in accounting from the University of Georgia. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Michael was already working remotely with GMSA's Atlanta office on the Accounting/Finance team when the pandemic hit. As the world ground to a halt with restrictions setting in, Michael decided this was the time to elevate his education and in turn, his career. "I had always heard UofL had a great accounting program, but once I visited the school and learned more about the program and the blended CPA component from Professor [Bill] Stout, I was sold," he says. "I was already working remotely, so I moved up to Louisville and started school while retaining my position with GSMA." Moving to a new city, dealing with a global public health crisis, working a full-time job, and pursuing an advanced degree was no small feat. Michael stresses this point because there were plenty of times he considered throwing in the towel. He credits his support system for enabling him to achieve such a daunting goal. "I had a lot of times where I just felt like quitting. Michael Wade [School of Accountancy Director] kept me motivated, though. I really connected with him; I'm really grateful to him for his advice because it definitely helped me to get to the finish line."

William G. Meyer III

Job Titles:
  • Managing Partner at Strothman and Company
William G. Meyer III's resume is an intimidating read. In addition to the 40 years of accounting experience it boasts, you'll also find 21 years' worth of seminars he's led, a handful of professional licenses he's obtained, the recognition he's received, and a long list of community involvement going back to 1989, including currently serving on the School of Accountancy Advisory Board here at the Collegeā€¦ and in his downtime, he likes to rollerblade around the city. William G. Meyer III is a force to be reckoned with-but you can call him Bill. Bill is currently a managing partner at Strothman and Company, a local CPA firm founded by College of Business Board Member Ray Strothman. Bill joined the company in 1995 because their focus is on smaller, entrepreneurial businesses instead of major companies. While most might tell you that being in executive leadership for an accounting firm would keep you busy enough, Bill offers his skills in service to others outside the office. Bill is a dedicated, engrained member of the Louisville community, serving on boards in a variety of industries around the city. He cites Family and Children's Place and Cabbage Patch Settlement House as two organizations he's embraced. "I've always wanted to give back. Our firm has an attitude of wanting to give back as a community, in not only money but time."
