MATSON MONEY - Key Persons

ALEX ASH

Job Titles:
  • Vice President of Advisor Relations
Since the age of 7, when economic hardship struck his family and altered their lives forever, Alex Ash was consumed with finding a way to safeguard others from similar misfortune. This life's mission led him to obtain a B.Sc. in Business from Elon University with a concentration in Finance. Mr. Ash subsequently took a role at Legg Mason-at the time one of the most recognized investment firms in the industry. He continued on with Legg Mason through its merger to Smith Barney, and eventually moved over to the insurance business at MassMutual. After a few years working with families as a financial advisor, however, Mr. Ash was becoming increasingly disenchanted by the realization that the industry as a whole was little more than a pipeline for selling products that produced lackluster results. It was at this critical juncture in his life that he attended one of Mark Matson's events which clarified the source of the problems with the industry and introduced him to a powerful alternative: empirically tested Nobel Prize winning investing principles. Six months later, Mr. Matson offered Mr. Ash a job at Matson Money; he enthusiastically accepted that offer and has now been with the company for more than a dozen years. In his role as VP of Advisor Relations, Mr. Ash coaches financial advisors to run the Matson Method, to save families from speculating and gambling, and to grow successful businesses. He has enjoyed speaking at numerous industry conferences and in front of thousands of investors all over the country. He also introduces new Advisors to the Matson Money platform and serves as a liaison between Matson Money and institutions such as the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys. Mr. Ash is trained in the life-altering coaching methods originated by Werner Erhard and taught by Steve Zaffron and the Vanto Group. He is an unrelenting stand for love, family, and the freedom to live an adventurous life. A lover of travelling and golf, Mr. Ash has taken full advantage of the golf lifestyle in Arizona.

Harry Markowitz received the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1990 for his contributions to financial economics. Markowitz developed the foundations of Modern Portfolio Theory in the 1950s, which demonstrates how an investment portfolio can be engineered to maximize return for any given level of risk. This work included the Markowitz Efficient Frontier which allows individual investors to understand how a portfolio's expected returns vary with the amount of risk taken for a given combination of asset classes. In 1989, Dr. Markowitz was awarded the John Von Neumann Theory Prize in Operations Research Theory from the Operations Research Society of America and Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (‘INFORMS') for contributions in portfolio theory, sparse matrix methods, and simulation language programming. Markowitz has taught economics at Baruch College at the City University of New York, from 1982 until 1993, where he is now Distinguished Professor Emeritus. He now engages as an Adjunct Professor at the Rady School of Management at the University of California, San Diego; as well as Principle of Harry Markowitz Company. Since its inception, the Matson Method of portfolio construction has been based on strong academic investing principles, enabling us to provide advisors and investors alike an investing methodology that aligns to their long-term financial goals and sensitive to their risk tolerance. Undoubtedly, essential to these principles is Markowitz's Modern Portfolio Theory, which we assert will continue to still work for generations to come to have peace of mind around their money. We are pleased to have Mr. Markowitz as a member of our Academic Advisory Board.

Mark Matson - CEO, Founder

Job Titles:
  • CEO
  • Founder
  • Member of the Executives Team
Mark Matson is an American entrepreneur, author, and innovator in the fields of investing science and financial education. He is the creator of educational experiences, platforms, and tools that make Nobel Prize winning investing research accessible to investors and transform their relationship to money. Most notably, he is the creator of The American Dream Experience and the Matson Method. In 1991, Matson founded Matrix Asset Allocation, which later became Matson Money, with little capital. His company was one of the first Registered Investment Advisors to reject a commissions-based model, which Matson viewed as structurally incompatible with investors' interests. In addition, Matson determined to provide investments based exclusively on a structured investing philosophy informed by the Nobel Prize winning scholarship of Eugene Fama, Harry Markowitz, Merton Miller, and William Sharpe. Although they were considered so unorthodox at the time that Matson received severe criticism and pushback from many associates, such practices have increasingly been adopted by the investing industry in subsequent years and up to the present day. Since its inception, Matson Money has experienced significant growth, from $0 to over $8.6 billion in assets under management.
