Dr. Pasquale A. Greco, one of the area's most prominent urologists, died in his Buffalo home after a short illness. He was 94.
Born In Buffalo, Dr. Greco was a 1935 graduate of Lafayette High School. He earned his medical degree from the University of Buffalo School of Medicine in 1941. Dr. Greco did his internship at the former Meyer Memorial Hospital and served in the Army Medical Corps during World War II. He received a presidential commendation for his emergency work after a tornado in Arkansas in 1942.
Returning from service, he did his residency in the Urology Department at Millard Fillmore Hospital and began his practice in 1949. In recent years, he was affiliated with Western New York Urology Associates in Cheektowaga and was the oldest practicing urologist in the nation. He continued seeing patients until the time of his death.
Dr. Greco served from 1953 to 1982 as chief attending physician at Millard Fillmore Hospital and director of the urology residency program. He was an attending physician there until 2010.
He developed the dialysis unit at the Kidney Disease Institute. He also headed the urology departments at the former Emergency and Columbus hospitals. He was a consultant to Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the former Lafayette General Hospital and a consultant emeritus to several other local hospitals.
The Center of Excellence in Urology at the Buffalo Ambulatory Surgery Center, 3095 Harlem Road, Cheektowaga, was named in his honor in 2001.
He was an associate clinical professor of urology at the UB Medical School for more than 20 years.
Dr. Greco received the UB Alumni Association's highest honor, the Samuel P. Capen Award, in 1976 after he established a loan fund for qualified medical students. He was a trustee of the UB Foundation and served on the Buffalo State College Council, the Buffalo State College Foundation and the Niagara University Council.
He also served for 20 years on the City of Buffalo Planning Board and was appointed to the state Health Research Council. He was a former member of the administrative council of the New York State Kidney Disease Institute. He served as president of the Buffalo Urology Society.
He received the Citation of Honor Award from the National Columbus Day Committee in 1982. He was a member of the board of trustees of the National Jewish Hospital and Research Center in Denver.
Dr. Greco served for 25 years on the board of Blue Shield of Western New York and spent five years as its chairman. He also served as president of the Buffalo Automobile Club, now AAA of Western New York, and was a member of the board of managers of the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society.
A parishioner at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, he was invested into the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem by Cardinal Terence Cooke in 1982 in St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City.
He was a former director of the Buffalo Club and the Country Club of Buffalo and was Buffalo chapter president of Confrerie de la Chaines des Rotisseurs, the world's oldest and largest food and wine society.
His wife of 43 years, the former Dorothy Davies, died in 1986.
His son, Dr. Joseph M., also is a prominent urologist with Western New York Urology.
