Clare Irving

Clare has over 30 years' experience working as a health physicist and a radiation protection adviser. She started her career providing health physics services to a wide range of nuclear site operators and naval bases. Clare attained RPA status in 1996. She has worked both embedded in site operational teams and as an independent adviser assessing projects for safe systems of working; drafting local rules, radiological risk assessments, method statements, etc.; and liaising the operational teams to implement safety systems and oversee those systems. Clare's work also includes industrial radiography, critical examinations, facility design, decommissioning of buildings and plant, transport package design, radioactive waste management from characterisation through to disposal, developing monitoring regimes, assessing risk, hazard and operability and hazard identification studies (HAZOPS and HAZIDS) and auditing.

Jo Duncan

Job Titles:
  • Radiation Protection Adviser Designate
Jo is working towards becoming a certified radiation protection adviser and radioactive waste adviser and joined RSK after having gained experience in radiation protection over a wide range of sectors, including academic and research institutions, veterinary practices, oil and gas installations/terminals and other varied industrial settings, from electronic engineering companies to fish canneries and beyond. Jo has also advised on matters concerning compliance related to health and safety legislation on artificial optical radiation (lasers) and non-ionising radiation (electromagnetic fields). Before embarking on a career in radiation protection, Jo was a university researcher and lecturer in physics and chemistry, with experience in delivering both theoretical and technical training and providing high quality supervision and mentoring of students and staff. It was in this role that Jo first worked with ionising radiation (X-ray diffraction/neutron diffraction) and non-ionising radiation (nuclear magnetic resonance). Jo draws heavily on his experience in academia and in radiation protection to fulfil the obligations of his current role, in which his responsibilities include providing technical radiological advice to clients; authoring technical documents; auditing client sites to assess levels of regulatory compliance; conducting radiological monitoring; and the delivery of bespoke training courses.

Karen Gunn

Karen is a radiation professional with extensive experience in the oil and gas sector in the UK and abroad and in the nuclear industry. She has worked in radiation protection for over 25 years and has been involved in decommissioning projects in the oil and gas industry for 8 years. A confident and effective communicator, Karen has a proven record of influencing decisions made by Health and Safety Executive and Scottish Environment Protection Agency inspectors. She represents the Society of Radiological Protection on the Scottish Non-Nuclear Industrial Liaison Group and is a member of the Scottish Regional Committee. Karen also mentors health, safety and environmental professionals on the radiological aspects of their roles.

Martin Brannock - Managing Director

Martin is the managing director of RSK Radiological. He has over 25 years' experience in the environmental engineering and consultancy field, and has worked on geoenvironmental, radiological, engineering and due diligence projects in the nuclear, oil, residential property, light and heavy industrial, commercial property and governmental sectors. He is the lead project manager of RSK's Radiological business unit and is responsible for the safety and financial performance of the business unit and its staff; staff management and development; managing the needs of key clients and developing new clients; business development; and tendering.ty and health.
