Amanda Lees

Amanda has a background in health and social care-focused research and evaluation, having worked in the private, local authority, health and academic sectors. She has held research roles at the universities of Winchester, Southampton and Oxford. She obtained her PhD from the University of Southampton in 2013. Prior to joining Health Innovation Wessex she worked in the Research and Development (R&D) team at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, supporting clinicians to develop research projects, facilitating patient and public involvement and overseeing a small team of Patient Research Ambassadors.

Anna Wykes

Anna initially joined the Wessex Patient Safety Collaborative (PSC) in August 2019 as a programme coordinator. After working on the COPD Discharge Bundle project and Medicine Safety in Care Homes Programme, she moved to work on the urgent Covid Oximetry at Home programme, during the autumn of 2020. Anna then moved to a new post, hosted by Health Innovation Wessex (at that time named Wessex AHSN), working for the Cancer Alliance in Hampshire and IOW. Before joining the PSC, Anna has worked for various NHS healthcare services as a registered Children's Nurse. She has worked in both tertiary and community settings, in a variety of clinical roles, and has a passion for delivering and supporting healthcare services to deliver high quality patient care. Most recently, as a Nurse Educator, she was responsible for leading the development and implementation of the first regionally delivered Paediatric Nurse Preceptorship Programme in England. This programme harnessed the expertise of the different paediatric teams throughout Wessex to provide standardised study days and documentation that promoted the delivery of high quality training and support to any new children's nurse employed within the region.

Emily is the Senior Programme Manager for Insight. She is an experienced programme manager with expertise in co-designing evaluations of programmes and innovations within the health, social care, and charitable sectors. Prior to joining the organisation, Emily managed Cancer Research UK's Health Professional Engagement Programme in Kent, Surrey and Sussex. She worked with primary care and NHS partners to drive forward improvements in cancer early diagnosis through the delivery of training and tailored support to primary care, using quality improvement methods and evidence-based approaches. Emily was the Evaluation and Learning Coordinator for THET (Tropical Health Education Trust), supporting health partnerships between NHS professionals and their counterparts in low-and-middle-income-countries to plan, monitor and evaluate their capacity-building projects. While in this role, Emily developed tools and resources for the health partnership community on monitoring and evaluation, project planning, and health systems strengthening.

Fiona Robertson

Fiona is a programme manager within Wessex Patient Safety Collaborative, and within Nationally Prioritised Innovations for Asthma Biologics. Fiona is a registered nurse with 17 years' experience working in the NHS. She has spent her career working in several London trusts both in Emergency Departments and Critical Care Units in a variety of roles. During this time, Fiona developed a passion for patient safety and patient experience whilst developing her clinical expertise. In 2017 Fiona took a career break and completed the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race before returning to London to undertake a new role as the Major Trauma Service Lead for south-west London and the wider Surrey and Sussex region. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Fiona decided to move out of London and back to the south coast. She is looking forward to spending more time outdoors and being nearer to her family.

Heather Stacey

Heather joined the Wessex Patient Safety Collaborative in February 2021 to support the Mental Health Safety Improvement Programme and Managing Deterioration (Children and PEWS) . She is an Occupational Therapist, completing her training in London, before moving to Edinburgh and then Dorset in 2007. Heather has a Masters in Advanced Mental Health Practice and has worked within the NHS for 30 years, mainly within mental health services in most settings including acute assessment, community and outreach posts - working clinically and in leadership roles. She undertook an HEE-funded Patient Safety Fellowship which focused on learning from staff reflections to focus on how patients and families are supported around the time of death. Heather is keen to address the key themes from this within her work: improving system working, communication and staff wellbeing.

Jackie Chandler

Jackie has a background in general and mental health nursing in both the NHS and voluntary sector before moving into health research, where she worked with the Royal College of Nursing and the then National Institute for Clinical Excellence (now the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence). She has worked on multi method trials in NHS settings with an emphasis on using qualitative methods in process evaluations. More recently, Jackie worked for the international organisation Cochrane for evidence synthesis (systematic reviews of studies). Jackie has recently completed a PhD in implementation research with a focus on complex systems.

Jo Murray

Jo Murray is the Associate Director for Patient Safety. She has a portfolio of projects delivered through the Wessex Patient Safety Collaborative team, including the national priorities laid out in the NHS Patient Safety Strategy covering deterioration, maternity and neonatal, medicines, mental health, and adoption & spread safety improvement programmes. She is also a national co-lead for the deterioration workstream. Jo joined us from Oxford AHSN where she was the workstream lead for sepsis & deterioration for 5 years. During the pandemic she played an instrumental role in the Covid Oximetry @ home project. She has a clinical background, working as a Respiratory Physiotherapist in several London teaching hospitals before moving to Hampshire and beginning her journey in patient safety and clinical governance at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. She is trained to Masters level in patient safety, quality improvement methodologies, facilitation and network weaving and is an ILM level 5 coach. Jo is passionate about adding value and working collaboratively to achieve service-user centred care.

Nicola is a registered pharmacist, who has over 20 years' experience in health and social care, working in senior roles at national, regional and local level on implementation, quality improvement, strategy and transformational change, medicines optimisation and patient safety, and cross sector partnership working.

Nikki King

Nikki is the Workstream Lead for the NHSE Medicines Safety Improvement Programme. She is a registered midwife with 16 years of NHS experience working within the Wessex region. Nikki has worked as a senior clinical leader on labour wards for most of that time with a passion for patient safety developing during her career. She gained a first-class honours degree and has completed modules in Public Health at MSc level. Nikki has worked on the project to establish a '24 hour labour line' whilst working for a local trust which has since been scaled up across one of the Local Maternity Systems in Wessex. More recently she has been in a quality assurance role before moving into a combined educational and patient safety role which is her passion. Within this role, she gained further experience in providing professional leadership in relation to managing deterioration whilst working in collaboration with other stakeholders to reduce adverse birth outcomes associated with monitoring the baby in labour. When Nikki is not at work she can normally be found outside, either gardening, tending to her pets, on a campsite (potentially with lots of Guides as she is also a Guide Leader!), at a festival or in her campervan (given the opportunity!).

She joins us from her previous role as Southampton and Southwest Lead for Onward Care working across the system to support complex discharge pathways across multiple organisations. She supported the system-wide transition to the Covid-19 Hospital Discharge Service Policy and Operating Model published by the government in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. This required support, coordination and leadership across health, social and voluntary sectors, across both primary and secondary care involved in patient discharge. This resulted in the implementation of multiple changes in policies, procedures, and processes safely at a large scale and pace.
