Adam Baker

Adam works within the Engineering and Tech teams at Carpmaels & Ransford. Adam covers a broad range of technologies within these teams, from industrial scale renewable energy solutions to precision surgical instruments. He has represented clients before the Examining and Opposition Divisions, and at the Boards of Appeal. A key area of Adam's practice is computer-implemented inventions. He has extensive experience drafting and prosecuting applications for software inventions, including expertise in cryptography, fintech, and machine learning algorithms. Adam also collaborates regularly with the Life Sciences team to pursue protection for both mechanical and software innovations in biotechnology, such as laboratory apparatus, computational diagnostics, and drug discovery. Adam holds a first-class Masters degree in General Engineering from the University of Durham, with specialisms in Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics. When not in the office Adam enjoys watching and playing as much sport as possible, usually field hockey and tennis, and has an adopted interest in any sport with a three letter acronym from family living across the pond. Adam Ellwood

Adam is part of the Pharmaceuticals team at Carpmaels & Ransford and his particular area of expertise is organic chemistry subject-matter. He spends the bulk of his time defending and opposing European patents which protect commercially important drugs. Adam also has extensive experience in European patent prosecution and advising clients on freedom to operate and validity. Adam started in the profession in 2012 and joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2015. Prior to this, he graduated from University College London with a first class degree in chemistry and a PhD in organic chemistry. Adam won numerous awards during his degree and PhD. He was one of fifteen students across all faculties at University College London to be awarded a Graduate School Research Scholarship for his PhD and in 2009 he was one of four students in the UK to be awarded the prestigious Syngenta Postgraduate Scholarship in Organic Chemistry. He also won the Faculty medal and Prize for the best final year undergraduate in the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and the Tuffnell Scholarship for the best graduate, under the age of twenty-four, progressing to the Research School in chemistry. Adam's PhD focused on the total synthesis of a natural product. He also developed a novel reagent which converts alcohols into iodides or sulfides. Adam's research resulted in a number of publications in peer-reviewed journals. In his spare time, Adam enjoys playing, watching and talking about football, keeping fit, skiing and cooking. Alastair Baldry

Alastair graduated from St John's College, Oxford with a first class degree in Chemistry. He joined Carpmaels & Ransford as a Trainee Patent Attorney in 2019, working in both the Chemistry and Life Sciences Pharmaceuticals teams. Alastair's final year Master's project focussed on developing interferometric scattering microscopy (iSCAT) for the application to absolute concentration measurements of biomolecules at the single-molecule level with a view to potential medical applications. Whilst at university, he was awarded various prizes for examination results including a Casberd scholarship. Outside of work, Alastair enjoys a wide range of sports including running, cycling and football. He is also a keen reader and has a new-found interest in cooking. Aled Richards-Jones

Aled works within the firm's Dispute Resolution team. He joined the team after qualifying as a barrister at a leading specialist IP barristers' chambers, and has experience of the full range of IP disputes with a particular focus on patents. His recent patent experience includes High Court disputes involving pharmaceuticals, endoscopy devices, Invisalign dental realignment technology, blood products and disposable medical wear. Aled has also provided validity and infringement advice relating to emulsion paints and animal reproduction technology. He has experience of coordinating parallel patent litigation across Europe, Latin America and India. Beyond patents, his experience includes a High Court trial concerning a trade mark licensing dispute and several copyright and trade mark disputes in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (including the Small Claims track). He has given talks and delivered a podcast on the protection of trade secrets and confidential information, including in the context of artificial intelligence and machine learning applications and the implications of the recent Trade Secrets Directive. Aled also undertakes advocacy for Carpmaels & Ransford's clients in appropriate cases. As an unled advocate, he has had success in obtaining strike-out/summary judgment in copyright cases in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court and in interim applications in a patents dispute in the High Court. Aled is committed to pro bono work, having previously travelled to Sierra Leone as part of a team of lawyers to deliver seminars on Sierra Leonean copyright, data protection and free speech laws to groups of lawyers, judges and journalists and to assist with the campaign to repeal Sierra Leone's seditious and criminal libel laws. Closer to home, he has represented claimants in the Social Security Tribunal as a volunteer at the Free Representation Unit and is a regular judge at the Oxford International IP Moot. Aled graduated from St John's College, University of Oxford, with a first class degree in chemistry. His final year thesis used specialist electrochemical techniques to study the feasibility of using hydrogenase and oxidase enzymes as catalysts for a biological fuel cell. This work was presented at the 2011 SuperGen Bioenergy Conference as the sole undergraduate presentation. Alex Fennell

Alex works within the life sciences field at Carpmaels & Ransford, with a particular focus on biotechnological inventions. He is involved in cases covering therapeutic antibodies, antisense compounds, microbiome compositions, gene therapies and biomedical methods. Alex is involved in the global prosecution of patent portfolios and has experience in EPO oppositions and appeals, as well as SPC prosecution. Alex has also worked on a number of high-profile cases before the UK High Court. Alex graduated from Oxford University in 2010, having studied Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. After his degree, Alex continued his research career and subsequently completed a Cancer Research UK funded PhD at University College London, the final year of which he spent at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. During his PhD, Alex investigated the role of specialised chromosomal regions in regulating bipolar spindle formation in fission yeast. Alex's work was published in a number of scientific journals and provided Alex with the opportunity to travel and present at international conferences. After completion of his PhD in February 2015, Alex worked with Sir Paul Nurse at the Francis Crick Institute, researching the effect of environmental signals on cellular differentiation. Alex's PhD project was in organic chemistry and he researched the use of carbohydrate-based ligands for catalysis. He is also interested in synthetic methodology which enables access to novel chemical space. Overall, his efforts were rewarded with prizes, the publication of several papers and various bursaries, which enabled him to study in Japan and present at internationally renowned conferences. Alexander Hackett

Alex joined the firm's Engineering and Tech teams in 2019 having earned a first class Master's degree in Physics from the University of Manchester, and a Bachelor's with distinction in Music Production and Sound Engineering from Point Blank Music School. While at University Alex focused on astrophysics, medical imaging and laser optics. In his final year he undertook a research project designing an educational demonstration of strong focusing as used in particle accelerators which required in-depth computational modelling of the motion of electrons accelerated through quadrupolar magnetic fields. His interest in astrophysics spilled over into his music degree 3 years later, which culminated in creating a musical interpretation of the Apollo 11 moon landings. When not in the office Alex continues to write his own music, as well as recording, mixing and mastering music for other artists. Alexander Wilson

Alex has worked on a diverse range of biochemical and biomedical subject matter, including nucleic acid sequencing methods, therapeutic products, and medical devices. Alex graduated from the University of Oxford in 2016, having completed a Master's degree in Biochemistry. During his time at university, Alex was awarded a Stafford Exhibition at Lincoln College, and secured a BBSRC Research Experience Placement (REP) to investigate newly discovered kinetochore proteins in the parasite responsible for causing sleeping sickness. Alexandra Bell

Alexandra is a Trade Mark Assistant dealing with all aspects of UK, European and International trade mark matters. Before joining Carpmaels & Ransford, Alexandra trained at a leading IP firm in New Zealand, gaining experience in trade mark availability, prosecution, and enforcement. This provided her with a thorough grounding in intellectual property concepts and a passion for assisting businesses nurture and enhance their brand power. Alexandra was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in March 2016, prior to which she obtained a degree in laws and a first class honours degree in management studies from the University of Waikato in New Zealand. During her studies, Alexandra majored in strategic management and specialised in entrepreneurship and innovation, which has equipped her with sound business acumen. Alexandra Drewe

Alex joined the Engineering and Tech teams at Carpmaels & Ransford in 2020, having completed a Master's degree in Engineering at Somerville College, Oxford, where she specialised in Biomedical Engineering. In her third year she was awarded the Shaw Lefevre Scholarship in Engineering Science. In her final year project she used data obtained from oral-based accelerometers to present a method based on the cross correlation coefficient for quantitatively measuring the synchronisation of athletes during physical activity. The findings of the study were promising, with potential for application in performance analysis for optimising player combinations and reducing injury. Outside of the office Alex represents the England Women's team for Lacrosse. She is a current defending European Champion, and was also a junior World Bronze medal winner in 2015.

Amy Shaw

Amy joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2019 as a Trainee Patent Attorney in the Life Sciences Biotechnology group. She graduated from the University of Cambridge with first class honours in Natural Sciences, having pursued a particular interest in Developmental and Reproductive Biology during her degree. Amy's final year research project, based in the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience, focussed on generating genetic tools to study the mechanisms of leucocyte migration in vivo. This was achieved through the creation of a transgenic zebrafish system, which produces a toxin that inhibits actin dynamics upon the administration of a specific drug. The efficacy of this system was then evaluated under confocal microscopy. Amy was awarded several scholarships in recognition of her academic achievements. In her free time, Amy is a keen rower, having represented Selwyn College whilst at Cambridge. She also enjoys travelling and sampling new cuisines, in her kitchen and abroad. Anais Cassaignau

Anaïs joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2021 as a Trainee Patent Attorney in the Life Sciences Biotechnology group. She graduated with a first-class degree in Biochemistry from University College London (UCL), ranking first in her cohort. Following this, Anaïs pursued a PhD and postdoctoral stay at UCL in Structural and Molecular Biology. During her PhD and postdoc, Anaïs studied how proteins - the workhorses of the cell - collapse into their functional folds while they are synthesised by ribosomes. She used NMR spectroscopy together with biochemical approaches to describe how the ribosome itself has a strong influence on protein folding. Her first-author papers were published in several high-impact papers including Nature Structural & Molecular Biology and Nature Chemistry and are leading to the design of novel therapeutic approaches in disease. During her postdoc, Anaïs was a committee member of the UCL Therapeutics Innovation Network, she co-organised three international conferences in her field and she mentored several undergraduate and PhD students in the laboratory. Outside of the office, Anaïs enjoys travelling and outdoor activities, in particular hiking and swimming.

Andreas Hänsele

Andreas joined Carpmaels & Ransford's Life Sciences team in 2020 as a Trainee Patent Attorney. He read Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at the University of Oxford (Brasenose College), graduating with an MBiochem (First Class) in 2016 and winning the Gibbs Book Prize in finals. Andreas then completed a DPhil at the University of Oxford (Lincoln College) on a Clarendon Scholarship. His doctoral research focused on the centrosome, the microtubule-organising centre in many dividing animal cells. Andreas used in vitro techniques such as X-ray crystallography and multi-angle light scattering to determine the 3D atomic structure and function of protein domains involved in centrosome formation. His and his colleagues' research was published in the high-impact journal Cell. During his DPhil, Andreas represented his fellow students as president of the Graduate Student Association at his department and held various positions on the Clarendon Council. He also tutored undergraduates in subjects such as bioenergetics and biophysics. In his spare time, Andreas enjoys working out at the gym and eating good food. Andreas Theisen

Andreas works in the firm's Life Sciences group and specializes in biological therapeutics and diagnostics, and in particular therapeutic antibody, gene therapy, and cell therapy products. His practice focusses on supporting the launch of clients' commercial products. By nature, the work is commercially sensitive and often contentious, and Andreas has considerable experience in handling innovator-on-innovator oppositions and appeals at the EPO both attacking and defending. Andreas recently worked on the successful EPO opposition defences of Stanford University's ‘Quake' patent estate covering commercial non-invasive pre-natal testing (NIPT) methods, which were also litigated in the UK High Court (Illumina, Inc v Premaitha Health Plc). Andreas has a breadth of experience providing strategic advice on prosecution strategies, supplementary protection certificates (SPCs), freedom-to-operate and finance-related due diligence activities, as well as coordinating with litigators in cases with anticipated or pending parallel EPO and national court proceedings. Contentious work aside, Andreas enjoys prosecuting commercially valuable portfolios before the EPO and in other major jurisdictions covering clinical candidates and platform technologies. Andreas has over a decade of experience having started his career at another leading private practice firm in 2008; he joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2016. Andreas' PhD research focussed on elucidating the regulation of methane and multi-carbon metabolism in the facultative methane-oxidizing bacterium Methylocella silvestris BL2. His research resulted in his authoring several scientific publications and culminated in the sequencing of the M. silvestris genome by the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute. Andrew Russell

Andrew is part of the Chemistry & Materials team at Carpmaels & Ransford. He works across a range of subject matter, with a particular focus on polymer chemistry, including the synthesis of polymers and their intermediates, as well as the commercial use of polymers in applications such as inks and coatings, textiles, and hydrogel devices. In addition, Andrew is also involved with cases covering medical devices, catalysis, industrial chemical processes, pharmaceuticals, and consumer products. Andrew principally handles prosecution of European patent applications, but also has experience in contentious proceedings at the EPO, including both oppositions and appeals, the drafting of applications, as well as the prosecution of applications in foreign jurisdictions, such as the US and Australia. Andrew joined the firm in 2016. He holds a first class MChem degree in chemistry with industrial experience from the University of Bristol, including a year at AWE investigating energetic macromolecules and a final year research project researching the mechanism of the Prins cyclisation reaction, as used extensively in natural product synthesis. Andrew stayed in Bristol to complete a Ph.D., synthesising strained organometallic rings that afford functional, metal-containing polymers via ring-opening polymerisation. Prior to joining Carpmaels, Andrew conducted postdoctoral work at the University of Bath, investigating the synthesis and processing of bio-derived polyesters in supercritical fluid, and the use of these materials as potential replacements for polyolefins. During his time in academia, Andrew presented his research at various international conferences and published 12 articles in the scientific literature. Andrew Wu

Andrew joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2019 as a Trainee Patent Attorney in the Life Sciences group. He graduated with a first-class degree in Biochemistry from University College London (UCL). Following this, Andrew pursued a PhD at the Francis Crick Institute and UCL, specialising in Molecular Biology and Genetics. During his PhD, Andrew investigated how aberrant transcription of non-coding DNA is limited around regulatory regions of the genome, using budding yeast as a model system. Andrew integrated genetic, genomic, proteomic, and bioinformatic approaches to identify that a key transcription factor represses divergent non-coding transcription at gene promoters to confer promoter directionality. These findings were published in the journal Molecular Cell. Andrew also enjoyed taking part in science outreach and undertook work experience in publishing at Springer Nature during his postgraduate studies. During his final year project at UCL, Andrew explored the signalling functions of tight junction transmembrane proteins in epithelial cells. He also spent a summer characterising the structural properties of large eukaryotic protein complexes at the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology (UCL/Birkbeck). Anna Kinsella

Anna joined Carpmaels & Ransford as a Trainee Patent Attorney in 2021. Before joining the firm, she graduated from the University of Bath with a first-class MChem (hons) in Chemistry for Drug Discovery, and subsequently completed a PhD in organic chemistry. During her PhD, Anna developed several novel reagents for the modular synthesis of spirocyclic pyrrolidine scaffolds, alongside a method for synthesising these reagents on gram-scale using flow photochemistry. As part of her undergraduate degree Anna spent a year on an industrial placement designing and synthesising novel chemical entities for the treatment of central nervous system diseases. Upon returning, she completed a final year research project on the synthesis of vitamin C analogues for assessment as potential anti-cancer compounds, for which she was awarded the Buchannan Prize. Anna also enjoyed working on multiple outreach and widening participation projects during her time at university, and alongside several prizes for outstanding academic achievement, she was awarded a Doctoral Recognition Prize for her contribution to these projects. Anna Leathley

Anna's area of expertise is in biotech. She has a current focus on cell therapy, and carries out European patent prosecution of a large portfolio of patent applications in this rapidly developing and complex field. Innovation in the cell therapy field comes in many forms, and in addition to this diverse field Anna also works with clients in many other technology areas. In particular she has extensive experience in the areas of protein therapeutics, diagnostics and platform technologies. She has worked with clients of all sizes and types to develop and execute their IP strategies. At all stages, she focuses on building effective working relationships to ensure that clients' objectives are fully understood. She has extensive experience of drafting patent applications, as well as prosecuting these and other applications at the EPO, and coordinating global patent portfolio prosecution. Running alongside her drafting and prosecution work, is her advice and contentious work. She has considerable experience of oppositions and appeals at the EPO, and supports clients with a variety of advice, including freedom to operate analysis and due diligence exercises. The technical expertise that Anna acquired in her studies and during her time as a patent attorney means that irrespective of the specific technology, she is able to think creatively and solve problems. Anna always looks for the bigger picture, but without losing sight of the technical detail. Her first class degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford gave her a broad understanding of the biotechnology field and she built on this with a PhD from the University of London. Anna's research in cell and developmental biology was carried out at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (now Cancer Research UK) and focused on intracellular protein targeting and signalling in development, specifically looking at EGF receptor family members and their signalling and intracellular targeting in polarised epithelial cells. Anna entered the patent profession in 2000, and joined Carpmaels & Ransford in 2013 from another large UK firm. While training she was awarded the Bill Caro prize for overall first place in the Certificate in Intellectual Property Law examinations. Anna is an active member of the IPO's Women in IP Committee, and is a co-chair of the "Mentoring Across Borders" subcommittee. Annabel has a diverse portfolio of clients and patent work in life sciences. Annabel enjoys contentious work, driven by her involvement in high-profile, multi-party oppositions at the EPO. She works with clients to defend high-value patents during opposition proceedings in Europe, and has participated in complex litigation strategies around the world, including ANDA litigation in the US and opposition proceedings in Australia. Annabel applies her litigation experience to her patent prosecution work and builds robust, practical patent portfolios. Always quick to consider the commercial goals, whether drafting new applications or advising on country coverage, she helps her clients to establish licensing strategies and to recognise opportunities for maximising patent term of commercial products. Working with global pharmaceuticals and start-up biotechnology companies she is familiar with a broad range of life sciences subject matter including antibody technology, antisense therapeutics, blood products, vaccines, small molecule pharmaceuticals and stem cell culture methods and platform technologies. She also worked at Future Science Group, a publisher of medical journals, where she contributed to the conception and launch of a new journal focusing on intellectual property in the pharmaceutical industry. Annabel received her academic training at Oxford University where she graduated with a first class degree in Biochemistry, receiving a University Gibbs Prize for her final exams. During her studies she carried out research in the field of molecular and structural biology, which led to a publication in PLoS Biology. Annabel has been an active member of several committees for the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys. She directed the student body from 2012-2013 and enjoys organising social events, from pub quizzes to cheese and wine nights. She also runs a weekly maths club for primary school children in Holborn with a team of volunteers at Carpmaels & Ransford. Outside of work, Annabel enjoys trekking, triathlons and trips abroad. Ashrafur Rahman

Ashrafur joined the Life Sciences group at Carpmaels & Ransford in 2021. He has a degree in Cell and Molecular Biology and a PhD in Bioscience from the University of Warwick. Ashrafur's PhD thesis focussed on understanding the process of selective autophagy in Drosophila melanogaster. Using quantitative proteomics to identify a panel of proteins selectively degraded through autophagy, Ashrafur's study lead to the identification of a novel autophagy receptor involved in the turnover of the golgi apparatus in Drosophila. Atar Shafighian

Atar is an Associate in our Transactions and Trade Mark teams. Before joining Carpmaels & Ransford, Atar trained both in private practice and in-house across a range of practice areas including data protection, commercial, finance and white-collar crime. Prior to qualifying as a solicitor, Atar worked both as a professional musician and senior lecturer, having trained originally in classical and jazz piano at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has released three albums to date and worked with a range of artists as a session musician. Ben Chapman

Ben works with a range of clients, from small UK based companies working with inventors to identify and protect their innovations at early stages of product development, to large, established multinational corporations helping to coordinate and manage worldwide patent portfolios. His particular expertise lies in the field of optical engineering, but during his time in the profession has gained experience in oppositions and patent prosecution across a wide range technologies, including medical devices, the automotive and aerospace industries, and computer implemented inventions. Ben joined Carpmaels & Ransford in September 2013 as a technical assistant. He holds a first class degree in Physics from Imperial College and a Masters by Research in Optics and Photonics. This was followed by a PhD in photonics and laser development, with a particular focus on fibre optics, nonlinear optics and short pulse laser systems. Ben's passion for technology - especially things which light up and go "pew pew" - led him to a PhD in the Photonics group at Imperial College London. This involved the development of a number of bespoke optical fibre based laser systems with applications ranging from high speed communications to biomedical imaging. His PhD thesis was awarded the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers post-graduate prize. Outside the office, Ben enjoys running and cycling. With a number of colleagues he took part in the Three Peaks Yacht Race, a multi-discipline adventure up the west coast of the UK, racing to the highest peaks in Wales, England and Scotland on foot, mountain bike and by sail. Ben Hartley

Ben joined Carpmaels & Ransford in August 2019 as a Senior Litigation Paralegal within the Dispute Resolution team and is responsible for overseeing and providing litigation support to the team. With over 15 years' working within litigation, initially as a Barristers Clerk, before becoming a Paralegal specialising in intellectual property, Ben has vast experience dealing with a wide range of complex contentious matters from first instance up to and including the CJEU. Ben's role involves managing all aspects court processes monitoring dates and correspondence, project managing resources, drafting correspondence and court documents, preparing materials and legal research. Prior to joining Carpmaels & Ransford, Ben was a Paralegal in a full service international contentious IP Law Firm. He is also a graduate member of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives where he specialised in Civil Litigation among other topics. He is now working towards becoming a qualified Legal Executive. Ben enjoys spending time with his young family and when time permits, playing golf and going fishing.
