In present time, the traditional diets for Native American people have changed. As a result, the health of community members have suffered greatly. There has been a higher incidence of diabetes, cancer, kidney and liver failure, hormonal imbalances, allergies, obesity, and alcohol and drug addiction. The higher incidence in disease can be attributed to environmental factors and lifestyle, which encompasses what we eat. The ingredients used in foods readily available have artificial flavors, artificial colors, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, fake sugar, and excessive carbohydrates, among many others. These now very common ingredients in our foods are not healthy for us, and we do not have the enzymes need to digest these. Native American people have been found to be very susceptible to diabetes due to the inability to process these refined sugars found in the now daily consumption.
