ABE SHAMESON

Abe is a registered architect in the state of California and a lighting designer LC certified by the NCQLP with a Master of Architecture degree and a Bachelor of Arts degree in architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. At Loisos + Ubbelohde, Abe is a lighting designer, an architectural designer, and a project manager for daylighting and sustainability consulting for a variety of commercial, institutional, government, and residential buildings. He has won a number of lighting design awards. Before joining Loisos + Ubbelohde, Abe worked as a designer for several architecture firms in the SF Bay area, specializing in designing high-end single family residences in locations such as San Francisco, Atherton, and the Carmel Highlands. He has also enjoyed the opportunity to execute designs with tight integration of architecture, daylighting, and lighting design for remodels of both his current home and his previous home.

ALAN DEMARCHE

Job Titles:

Alan holds a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor's of Arts in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. He has taught courses in Structures, Design Fundamentals, and Graphic Representation, as well as workshops on physical and digital modeling at UC Berkeley. As an associate at Loisos + Ubbelohde, Alan specializes in advanced simulation and visualization methods for daylighting, electric lighting, exterior building reflections - from glare to convergence, and the development of complex simulation materials. He has served as project manager and analyst across multiple scales and sectors, from concept through commissioning and post-completion performance evaluation. Working in L+U's fabrication shop and lighting lab, Alan has streamlined CNC operations and developed methods and equipment for glass, shading, and cladding measurement. Alan's personal and academic interests examine traditional notions of architecture, such as regional vernacular, spaces of ritual, and monumentality, through the lenses of contemporary issues and new technology which he explores through various physical, print, and digital media. His work has been published in Paradigms in Computing: Making, Machines, and Models for Design Agency in Architecture.

BRENDON LEVITT

Brendon is a licensed architect and holds architecture degrees from Yale University and UC Berkeley. He has been an associate at L+U since 2005 and has served as designer, analyst, and project manager for over 120 buildings in 15 countries. Brendon has expertise in electric lighting and daylighting, advanced building envelopes, thermal comfort and energy use, life cycle analysis, and data visualization. Working with research-grade simulation tools such as Radiance, EnergyPlus, and Therm, Brendon has contributed to cutting-edge research on high-performance buildings. In parallel, Brendon is an Associate Professor at California College of the Arts where he has been teaching courses on sustainable design and building technology since 2006. As an academic, he writes and lectures on the synthesis of contemporary culture, sensory perception, and new technology. He has received numerous awards for architectural design and scholarship including Fulbright, Luce and Branner Fellowships. He has also worked with prominent architects around the world, most notably the Pritzker Prize Laureate, Fumihiko Maki. During four years working in Tokyo, Brendon's projects included the New York Headquarters of the United Nations, the MIT Media Lab, and the Center for the Arts at Washington University in Saint Louis.

EDUARDO PINTOS

Eduardo is an architectural designer and energy modeler specialized in lighting and daylighting design and simulation at Loisos + Ubbelohde. Trained in architecture in Spain and Switzerland, he holds a Master of Architecture degree from the University of California, Berkeley and a Professional Degree in Architecture from the University of the Basque Country (Spain), where he is a licensed architect. Eduardo has taught classes at UC Berkeley in introduction to Architecture, graphic representation and media techniques. Eduardo's interest focuses on high performance facades, building technology and energy efficiency in buildings. His previous work experience in Spain includes all project phases from concept design to construction development and on-site monitoring. His graphic design is also featured in presentations for competitions, exhibitions, and client meetings at Loisos + Ubbelohde. Eduardo blends his software skills in lighting simulation tools, including Radiance and AGi32, with his design perspective as a daylighting and lighting consultant. He previously won second prize in an international competition for a vertical zoo in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

George Loisos

George Loisos is a founding partner of Loisos + Ubbelohde and brings extensive practice and research experience along with strong project management to L+U. As Principal-in-Charge, he has been involved in projects large and small from Abu Dhabi and India, Europe and throughout the US. George has served on the IEQC for the USGBC and managed research programs for the California Energy Commission and CIEE. He lectures extensively on environmental design issues at professional conferences, and has been an invited lecturer and reviewer for architecture schools and has taught at ISTHMUS in Panama at Tokyo Institute of Technology. Working with optics and solar mechanics, George led the team in solving problems of solar reflections and convergence in Las Vegas and London. He also worked with beamed sunlight in the reactivation of the Cal Tech Coelostat and the design and installation of Light Fall, a sculpture in New York featuring a solar-tracking telescope delivering sunlight to 240 feet of fiber optics.

MICHAEL BEGGS

Michael holds a Master of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley and a Bachelor of Arts from Hampshire College. At Loisos and Ubbelohde, Michael specializes in daylight and electric lighting simulation, covering a variety of building types including museums, offices, and historic buildings. He also works on research projects about the simulation of diffusing, reflective, and angularly-selective materials. Michael has taught classes about buildings and the environment, architecture and cinema, and color at UC Berkeley. His academic research interests include architecture in rural America, color, modernism and anxiety, and architecture and cinema. As an expert on Josef Albers, the Bauhaus, and Black Mountain College, Michael has led workshops and given lectures at The Bauhaus Dessau, The Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, and the Exploratorium. His writing has appeared in books, journals, websites, and exhibition catalogues including Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College 1933-1957 (Yale University Press, 2015) and Josef Albers: Interaction (Yale University Press, 2018).

NATHAN BROWN

Nathan is a LEED Accredited Professional and ASHRAE certified Building Energy Modeling Professional with a Master of Architecture and a Master of Science in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley and an undergraduate degree from Yale University. As an Associate at Loisos + Ubbelohde, he brings expertise in thermal comfort and energy analysis, sensor network deployment, field assessment of existing building performance, and calibrated simulation. Nathan's passion for data visualization as a tool to reveal patterns and develop deeper understanding informs his work from building performance dashboard design to building performance assessment. His previous work experience includes developing data visualizations using script-generated graphics for the Center for the Built Environment. Nathan has also served as Adjunct Professor of Architecture at California College of the Arts and Lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley.

SAM MILLER

Sam holds a Master of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley and an undergraduate degree from Union College. At Loisos + Ubbelohde, Sam works in daylighting simulation, energy modelling, and has experience with a number of software tools including EnergyPlus. She has researched methods of modeling future weather data for use in designing more resilient buildings against climate change. In academics, Sam has instructed courses on architectural representation and graphic design. Additionally, she was a 2019-2020 Watson Fellow for her project - Poignant Nostalgia: Investigating Architecture through Abandoned Spaces. This interest also tied into her Master's thesis which investigated material salvage and reuse in the Hudson Valley of New York.

SANTOSH PHILIP

Santosh is a software specialist, LEED Accredited Professional, and ASHRAE certified Building Energy Modeling Professional with degrees from the Center of Environmental Planning and Technology, in Ahmedabad, India, and the University of Minnesota. Santosh designs climate-responsive residential and commercial buildings at Loisos + Ubbelohde. Previously Santosh designed climate-responsive residences, college campuses and commercial and manufacturing facilities in western India. His energy research activities include developing a daylighting software package, updating energy software used to qualify buildings under California Energy Code Title 24, and developing a graphic interface with energy simulation software packages. He is the author of proprietary software programs that allow detailed energy simulations of complex buildings. Previously Santosh worked as the Vice President of Product Development at Materion, Inc., and the Interim Vice President and Product Manager at Qool.com. Santosh has received the Gold Medal from the Gujarat Institute of Architects.

STEPHEN WASILEWSKI

Stephen holds a PhD from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, a Master of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Arts in Physics from Wesleyan University. His doctoral dissertation developed new methods for quickly and accurately simulating daylight in buildings. Stephen first joined Loisos + Ubbelohde in 2006 as an Architectural Intern / Daylight Modeler. After a hiatus from 2008-2013 during which he completed his architectural internship, became a licensed architect, and built bespoke wooden furniture, Stephen rejoined Loisos + Ubbelohde as an Associate specializing in daylight, lighting design, and facilitating the simulation and analysis of difficult to answer lighting questions. While Stephen stopped working full time at Loisos + Ubbelohde at the end of 2018, he still maintains the in-house software he developed and helps the current staff continue to improve our understanding of light in buildings through simulation.

STEVEN EICHBAUM

Steven is a certified green building professional, who brings a wealth of skills and knowledge to L+U. Steven's role is fabrication and special projects and in this capacity brings his expertise in building prototypes, parts of sculptures, models etc. Steven is the person who will make something in half of the time, twice as good and ten times nicer than expected. Steven has a background in boat building, precision wood working as is a master of fine green building construction.

Susan Ubbelohde

Susan Ubbelohde is a founding partner of Loisos + Ubbelohde and Professor Emerita in Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. As Principal-in-Charge, she has been involved in projects from zero-energy houses to large commercial offices, institutional laboratories, and major urban art museums, as well as guidelines for sustainable design in both Hawai'i and Japan. Susan has directed research on daylighting design, daylighting software, climate responsive design and monitored building performance for the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, the University of California Energy Institute, the California Institute for Energy Efficiency and as a Fulbright Scholar. Susan has also taught at CEPT in India, ISTHMUS in Panama. and Tokyo Institute of Technology. She has served on conference and publication review boards, professional design award juries, and has delivered keynotes and invited lectures internationally.
