The company began in 1872 when Alfred B. Miller and Elmer Crockett founded the South Bend Tribune. Over the last five generations, Schurz has invested in connecting people with information through the acquisition of newspapers, radio and television stations, digital companies, broadband operations and cloud services providers. South Bend Tribune Charities, Inc. was founded in 1940 by Franklin D. Schurz, F.A. Miller, and Charles E. Crockett. The impact of that foundation has continued under both the South Bend Tribune Foundation, Inc. name and what is now called Schurz Communications Foundation, Inc.
