Pat earned a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from The University of Health Sciences / The Chicago Medical School (now the Rosalind Franklin Institute (North Chicago, IL) (1994)). His doctoral project related to the biochemical characterization and cloning of the cDNA encoding a porcine cytolytic trigger molecule which was identified as an Fc-g receptor (e.g., Halloran, et al. J. Immunol. 153(6): 2631-41 (Sept. 15, 1994) and Halloran, et al. Cell. Immunol. 158(2): 400-13 (Oct. 15, 1994)). During his graduate studies, Pat served as Secretary (1989), Vice-President (1990), and President (1991-1993) of the Graduate Student Association and won first place in the 1994 Sigma Xi Research Society research competiton ("Identification of the Porcine Cytolytic Trigger Molecule G7 as an Fc-g receptor").
