In June 2001, the Ice House Artist Studios at 100 43rd Street in Lawrenceville opened its doors as a new facility for 32 artists, arts-related businesses and arts organizations. The project was enthusiastically supported by the Lawrenceville community for its re-use of a long-abandoned, historic building and its attraction of artists and new businesses to the neighborhood. The National Park Service granted historic status late in 2000 by listing the property on the National Register of Historic Places... The 35,000 sq. ft. ice house building was originally constructed in 1907 by the Consolidated Ice Company and operated as an ice making facility until the early 50s. The property was used only sporadically over the second half of the century and was a tremendous eyesore in the community with its boarded-up windows and generally run..
