Alla Hill (she/her) is a Science Policy Associate within the Science Department. In this role, she works closely with program teams to review and develop evidence-based materials and messages to inform strategy across five primary areas: Healthy Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Health Disclosures, Healthy Retail, Restaurant Kids Meals, and School Foods.
Prior experience
Alla is a nutrition researcher with a background in community nutrition and food security research. She aims to support robust nutrition and public health policy to promote food security, reduce health disparities, and increase equity in access to nutrition services. Alla holds a Ph.D. in Nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a B.S. in Nutrition and Foods with a concentration in Dietetics from Appalachian State University, and is a Registered Dietitian.

Anupama Joshi (she/her/hers) leads CSPI's program strategy on national, state, and local policy advocacy; legislative campaigns; and regulatory affairs to support equitable access to healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. She oversees projects on a wide range of issue areas such as school nutrition, healthy food access, food retail, food service guidelines, pouring rights, labeling, corporate engagement, food safety, additives, dietary supplements, and agricultural biotechnology.

Anupama is an experienced leader driving evidence-based policies, programs, and funding in the nutrition, public health, agriculture, and environmental sectors. Previously, Anupama was executive director of the Blue Sky Funders Forum (a working group of the Environmental Grantmakers Association). Prior to that, Joshi was the founding executive director of the National Farm to School Network, where she successfully built cross-sectoral partnerships, scaled up program models, and advocated for local, state, and federal policies. She holds an MS in nutrition from M.S. University in Baroda, India, and spent the first part of her career on related projects in India, Thailand, and Malaysia. She is co-author of Food Justice (MIT Press, 2010).

Ashley Hickson (she/her/hers) leads efforts to build internal capacity and create an ecosystem of strategic partnerships in the areas of equity, justice, and social impact.
Prior experience
Prior to joining CSPI, Ashley served as Director of Community Impact at the American Heart Association where she oversaw her market's food insecurity strategy through community-level policy, systems, and environmental change approaches. She holds an MPH from the University of Texas Health Science Center and dual degrees (BBA/BS) from the University of Texas at Austin. She earned a Doctorate of Public Health with a concentration in Health Equity and Social Justice from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Asia M Carter, MPH Capacity Building and Engagement Associate amcarter@cspinet.org Asia Carter (she/her/hers) maintains and builds relationships with CSPI's partners regionally located in the Western part of the U.S. She leads capacity-building and power building opportunities to support and empower the work of community-based organizations while centering the leadership of those most impacted by health inequities.
Aviva Musicus (she/her/hers) directs CSPI's Science Department. Her team helps to facilitate and strengthen transparency, use of best available science evidence, and rigorous scientific methods throughout CSPI's work.
Belayhun helps ensure all financial accounting functions are completed accurately, prepares interim financial reports, and manages periodic compliance reporting and budget preparation.
Bethany Williams (she/her/hers) manages CSPI's relationship with current and potential grantees in the Northeast.
Bonnie Liebman (she/her) has been the key link in formulating CSPI's policies on diet and health. She provides the scientific input on many of the organization's administrative petitions and legislative proposals. Bonnie is the author of numerous articles on diet and cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, memory loss, and other illnesses for Nutrition Action, which has roughly 400,000 readers nationwide. She served on the advisory committees that issued the American Cancer Society's 2001 and 1996 Guidelines on Nutrition and Physical Activity for Cancer Prevention.

Caitlin Dow (she/her/hers) writes for CSPI's flagship publication, Nutrition Action, addressing the evidence on the latest health trends. Caitlin reviews the science related to nutrition, dietary supplements, exercise, sleep, sustainability, and more.
Prior experience
Before joining CSPI, Caitlin completed her postdoctoral research training in vascular biology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She earned an MS and PhD in Nutrition Science from the University of Arizona and a BS in Biology from Northern Arizona University.
Cassie Harrison-Ramos (she/her/hers) work focuses on SNAP policy and healthy food access for families with low incomes. She works with partners and community-based groups to engage with SNAP participants about strategies for maximizing nutrition security.
Prior experience
Before joining CSPI, she served as the HHMI Science Policy Fellow at Research!America supporting health research advocacy, and as a researcher at City of Hope investigating the links between obesity and breast cancer. She earned her PhD and MS in Biological Sciences, and her BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Catherine Cochran (she/her/hers) supports CSPI's Child Nutrition Programs initiatives, focusing on state and local school food policies. She advocates for science-based policies to ensure every child has access to healthy, delicious foods.

Prior to joining CSPI, Catherine served as a Food Policy Program Assistant for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and as a Food Systems Intern for Community Health Improvement Partners in San Diego, California. She earned an MA in Food Systems and Policy from New York University and a BA in Political Science from San Diego State University.

Chris Schmidt manages day-to-day circulation and marketing operations, including CSPI donations up to $1,000 and Nutrition Action subscription inquiries.
Chris Anderson serves a Office Manager and is responsible for managing day-to-day office operations and assists with a variety of Human Resources-related activities. Anderson's administrative services duties include maintenance of the physical office space, managing off-site storage, and mail room management. His HR role includes managing new hire onboarding, coordinating payroll, organizing office-wide events, and assisting with benefits administration.

Colleen O'Day (she/her/hers) manages human resources-related functions and administrative operations. This includes hiring and talent management, compensation and benefits management, oversight of personnel policies, ensuring compliance with employment laws, and managing HR data systems.

Prior to joining CSPI in 2009, Colleen served as Director of Human Resources at People for the American Way. Before that, she held a variety of positions throughout her 18 years at Common Cause, including five years in the media relations office and 11 years as Director of Human Resources. David Rousseau, MPH, is Vice President and Executive Director of Health Policy Media and Technology and Publisher of Kaiser Health News. He oversees KFF's health policy media programs, including Kaiser Health News and all journalism programs, and directs the Foundation's technology and online activities. Previously, Mr. Rousseau was Director of KFF's statehealthfacts.org project and was an Associate Director of KFF's Program on Medicaid and the Uninsured (KPMU). His work at KPMU was focused on Medicaid and CHIP spending, financing and enrollment, as well as Medicaid service delivery issues, including managed care. He has also managed a range of projects relating to health reform, access to care and health spending. Mr. Rousseau currently serves as the Chair of the Media Impact Funders Board, is a member of the boards of Grantmakers in Health (GIH) and the National Academy of State Health Policy (NASHP), and advises Crisis Text Line on data ethics issues.
Mr. Rousseau has been a member of the adjunct faculty of the George Washington University School of Public Health as a Lecturer in the department of Health Policy, and has served on numerous task forces and advisory groups for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the National Academy of Sciences, and the City of New Orleans (David's hometown). His work has appeared in journals including Health Affairs and the Journal of the American Medical Association, where he created and edits the monthly "Visualizing Health Policy" series in partnership with the Journal. He has spoken on health policy and journalism topics at a wide range of conferences and events. Prior to joining the Foundation, Mr. Rousseau worked as a consultant at The Lewin Group. Mr. Rousseau received his Master's in Public Health from Yale University's School of Medicine, and his Bachelor of Arts in political science from Yale College.

As an Edward Alexander Bouchet Doctoral Fellow, DeAnna earned her PhD in Nutritional Sciences from Howard University. Her doctoral dissertation work focused on nutritional management of chronic disease among low income, minority residents in DC. DeAnna earned a MSc in Herbal Medicine from the Maryland University of Integrative Health and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a BS in Psychology from Howard University, completing her Post Baccalaureate Training at the National Institute of Mental Health within the Laboratory of Cellular & Molecular Regulation. DeAnna is the Chair of the DC Board of Nutrition & Dietetics and is also a Licensed Dietitian-Nutritionist and Certified Nutrition Specialist. DeAnna most recently served as policy advisor and public health Nutritionist for Terrific, Inc., a nonprofit housing and human services organization, where she advised DC policy for managing chronic disease for low income, at-risk, senior citizens.

Emily Friedman is Legal Affairs Attorney at Center for Science in the Public Interest, where she researches legal issues, develops legislative and other materials supporting advocacy efforts, and provides technical support to policymakers and advocates working on national, state, and local food and nutrition policies.

Erin Ogden (she/her/hers) supports CSPI's federal child nutrition policy efforts through cultivating a strong, nationwide network of grassroots advocates and contributing to CSPI's array of advocacy resources.
Eva Greenthal (she/her) oversees CSPI's federal food labeling work, leveraging the food label as a powerful public health tool to influence consumer and industry behavior. Eva also conducts research and supports CSPI's science-centered approach to advocacy as a member of the Science Department.
Prior experience
Prior to joining CSPI, Eva led a pilot evaluation of the nation's first hospital-based food pantry and worked on research initiatives related to alcohol literacy and healthy habits for young children. Before that, Eva served as a Program Coordinator for Let's Go! at Maine Medical Center and as an AmeriCorps VISTA Member at HealthReach Community Health Centers in Waterville, Maine. Eva holds a dual MS/MPH degree in Food Policy and Applied Nutrition from Tufts University and a BA in Environmental Studies from University of Michigan.
A member of the Development Team, Garrett Darrah (he/him/his) supports CSPI's grantmaking program, serving as a resource for grantee partner organizations as well as internal staff.

Prior to joining CSPI, Garrett worked as an Agency Relations Coordinator for Food Bank of Central New York, where he established and grew relationships with community-based organizations battling food insecurity. He has also served as an Agriculture Program Coordinator for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County, where he supported small-scale farmers and the development of a stronger local food economy.
Giridhar Mallya, MD, MSHP, is a public health physician and health policy expert who serves as Senior Policy Officer for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In this role, he develops strategy in emerging health and social policy arenas; identifies and supports people, organizations, and networks that advance equity-promoting policies; informs Foundation-wide policy agenda-setting; and liaises with city, state, and federal leaders.
Dr. Mallya was previously Director of Policy and Planning for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. He is a board certified family physician and an adjunct assistant professor of family medicine and community health at the University of Pennsylvania.

As a policy associate, Irene Ulrich (she/her) supports CSPI's scientific integrity initiative and advocates for transparency and evidence-based policymaking.
Prior experience
Prior to joining CSPI, Irene worked as a clinical pharmacist and program director in a large family medicine clinic. In this role, she applied evidence-based medicine practices to patient care, advocated for pharmacists in public health programs, and conducted practice-based research. Irene is also passionate about teaching and holds an adjunct appointment with the University of North Carolina (UNC) Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Irene received her PharmD degree from UNC in 2012 and her MPH from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health in 2023.

Jacob Multer (he/him/his) is a Federal Affairs Policy Associate working on nutrition policy and advocacy at CSPI. He collaborates with the Hill, federal advocates, coalition partners, and state and local partners to advance equitable nutrition policy.

Prior to joining CSPI as a full-time staff member, Jake interned on CSPI's SNAP policy team, worked on political campaigns, and taught a bioinformatics course for high schoolers from backgrounds underrepresented in STEM. Jake has several years of experience as an organizer and advocate working with displaced persons as a leader of the Wesleyan Refugee Project. He holds a B.A. in Government and Molecular Biology & Biochemistry from Wesleyan University.

James leads CSPI campaigns whose goals are to minimize threats to public health from food safety issues and animals in the food system.
Prior experience
James's work prior to joining CSPI spanned the spectrum of the food production system and included production animal medicine as a dairy veterinarian, international agriculture development, and infectious disease research and response system analysis. He earned a BS in Animal Science and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis, and a Master of Public Health at the University of Minnesota. He also completed a residency in public health at the University of Minnesota.
Jane Schmitz, PhD, is currently an advisor to the From Now On Fund and an experienced public health instructor and researcher.

The From Now On Fund seeks to eliminate systemic inequities in health and well-being outcomes in the United States. Dr. Schmitz served as Adjunct Professor at Occidental College, Clinical Assistant Professor and curriculum advisor at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine. She was an Emerson National Hunger Fellow at the Congressional Hunger Center, a Program Officer at USDA's Food and Nutrition Services in the Western Region and a US Peace Corps volunteer in Niger, West Africa. She holds a PhD in International Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Jennifer as Director of Business Operations, brings a wide range of marketing experience including print and digital marketing strategy, list acquisition, copy-writing, data analysis, reporting, and budget management. Jennifer comes to CSPI after 16 years of service with Access Intelligence, a worldwide information and marketing company. As publisher, Jennifer managed the marketing, editorial, production and sales teams for their defense, aerospace, clean energy and healthcare print and digital publications and events. Prior to that Jennifer worked for the Washington Business Journal where her responsibilities included coordinating operations in circulation and marketing. She earned a B.A. from Howard University.

Jessi Silverman, MSPH, RD Senior Policy Associate jsilverman@cspinet.org Jessi (she/her) coordinates CSPI's advocacy to strengthen the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and to adopt healthy food procurement and food service policies in public institutions.
Joelle Johnson (she/her/hers) leads CSPI's Healthy Food Access Team and advocates for policies that strengthen U.S. food safety net programs in order to help lift people out of poverty and provide equitable access to a food environment that empowers individuals to build healthy eating patterns that meet their needs.

Lisa Mankofsky (she/her/hers) leads CSPI's class action litigation, administrative lawsuits, and negotiations. CSPI's class action litigation challenges deceptive advertising and labeling practices concerning food and supplements. In order to protect the health and safety of consumers, we also litigate under the Administrative Procedure Act against governmental agencies where the agency has unlawfully withheld or unreasonably delayed agency action; and/or where the agency acted in an arbitrary and capricious way, abused its discretion, and/or acted unlawfully. The Litigation Department also engages in negotiations with food and dietary supplement manufacturers seeking agreements to correct deceptive advertising and labeling practices.

Lynn Silver, MD, MPH, is a pediatrician, public health researcher and advocate, currently Senior Advisor at the Public Health Institute and Clinical Professor at the University of California San Francisco. She focuses on policies to prevent noncommunicable and its risk factors, including unhealthy diet, at home and globally. Silver was Assistant Health Commissioner of New York City under Mayor Bloomberg, leading the groundbreaking team that launched the nation's first trans fat ban, calorie labeling law, and the National Salt Reduction Initiative, and worked on the Berkeley team that passed the nation's first soda tax. She chairs the California Alliance for Prevention Funding, working on creating a Health Equity and Racial Justice Fund in California, is leads the Getting it Right from the Start initiative to incorporate lessons from tobacco control to better regulate the emerging legal cannabis industry. Silver oversees a portfolio of policy research on food , including soda tax evaluation, and on cannabis regulation. She was also the former Director of the College of Health Sciences of the University of Brasilia, has worked widely in Latin America on access to health care, safety of medicines, and prevention of noncommunicable disease, and was a Visiting Scholar of International Health at the Karolinska Institute.

Matt Simon focuses on identifying and bringing consumer class actions challenging food and supplement companies' deceptive advertising and labeling practices, working with CSPI staff and private lawyers. Michael Nutter, Board Chair, is the former two-term Mayor of Philadelphia and served nearly 15 years on the Philadelphia City Council.
In Monica's role, she helps ensure all financial accounting functions are completed accurately, prepare interim financial reports, and manage periodic compliance reporting. She is responsible for many aspects of general ledger accounting, including account reconciliations and budget preparation, and assuring compliance with GAAP.

Nancy Fink (she/her/hers) is the Campaign Manager Sugary Drinks. She works strategically to help spark and support initiatives by national, state and local organizations, policymakers, and advocates to build synergy and national momentum for policies that address overconsumption of sugary drinks. She coordinates CSPI's SSB field leadership events (including Sugary Drink Summits), goals and strategies; serves on SSB reduction-focused coalitions and workgroups to cultivate partnerships to grow support for campaign goals to reduce consumption of sugary drinks; develops well-written, persuasive materials, such as reports, fact sheets, letters, testimony, talking points, and social media; and, provides technical assistance, materials, resources, and strategic advice to sugary drink tax campaigns.

Sara John (she/her/hers) leads CSPI's federal policy and private sector efforts to create a healthier, more equitable food retail environment.

Sarah Sorscher is an experienced advocate with a passion for public health who fights for a safer, healthier, more transparent food system by promoting consumer safeguards with Congress, federal agencies, and state and local governments. As Director of Regulatory Affairs, she manages CSPI's policy work related to food safety and labeling, allergens, food additives, dietary supplements, and other consumer products. Her work includes serving on federal advisory committees, testifying before Congress and federal agencies, offering technical advice to policymakers, and providing commentary to the media on consumer and food safety issues.

Toby Beckelman (she/her/hers) advocates for policies that reduce food insecurity, create healthier and more accessible food environments, and strengthen the public health impacts of the U.S. food safety net, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the charitable food system.
