Alankar is a post-doctoral research scientist based in the Nuffield Department of Population Health and Big Data Institute. He works on digital health data from smartphone apps and wearable devices.
Alankar obtained his DPhil from the Nuffield Department of Population Health, focusing on audio semantics and content analysis on recordings collected from "GameChanger", a major new study for detecting longitudinal cognitive change in population-level cohorts. Before starting at NDPH, Alankar worked as a research engineer at Oxford Wave Research Ltd., Oxford, where he developed products in the areas of audio fingerprint analysis, audio signal processing, and speaker recognition. He has a bachelor's degree (B.E.) in Computer Science and Engineering and a master's (MSc) from the Institute of Information Technology, Alpen-Adria Universität, Austria, working on his master's thesis on "Combining multiple tracking approach to improve performance".
Since completing his DPhil in 2023, Alankar has been a post-doctoral research scientist. Based on the digital data (audio, Bluetooth, GPS, acceleration, and images) collected from smartphone apps and wearable devices (Axivity and Fitbit), his research uses feature engineering and epidemiology methods to investigate the determinants of early Alzheimer's disease (AD).
I have been working at the University for the past three years, recently transferred from the Nuffield Department of Medicine.

Alex Baxter is a senior developer in the Web Based Trials Programming Team, which specialises in developing web applications for administering NDPH clinical trials. He has worked on many trials during his time at CTSU, including international large multi-centre randomised clinical trials in the renal and vascular areas: starting with SHARP (Study of Heart and Renal Protection) and the pilot studies UK-HARP-I and UK-HARP-II; THRIVE (Treatment of HDL to Reduce the Incidence of Vascular Events); REVEAL (Randomised Evaluation of the Effects of Anacetrapib through Lipid-modification), ORION-4 (of inclisiran in preventing heart attacks and strokes), EMPA-KIDNEY (The Study of Heart and Kidney Protection With Empagliflozin), and ASCEND PLUS (in the ASCEND - A Study of Cardiovascular Events iN Diabetes - trial series, examining semaglutide for reduction of vascular events in people with type 2 diabetes).
Additionally, Alex has assisted with epidemiological studies and trial meta-analysis, including: ATT (Anti-Thrombotic Treatment Trialists' Collaboration), CTT (Cholesterol Treatment Trialists' Collaboration), and as architect and lead developer for the UK Biobank Access Management System (AMS2).
Prior to joining CTSU in 2000, Alex worked for 5 years as a data manager and developer on ACST (Asymptomatic Carotid Surgery Trial), a CTSU-supported external trial based on St. Mary's Hospital Medical School (Imperial College School of Medicine).
Job Titles:
- Member of the NDPH GRADUATE STUDIES TEAM
- Clinical Course Administrator
I am a data scientist at the Big Data Institute where I work with Dr. Goylette Chami (Big Data and Helminth Epidemiology Research Group) on schistosomiasis in Uganda. My role involves the management, wrangling, and analysis of multi-dimensional data, including surveys, images, and spatio-temporal data.
Prior to my work with the Big Data Institute, I graduated with an MSc Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from the University of Birmingham. My thesis focused on developing a tool that bridges the communication gap between sign language users and English language speakers by utilising the power of computer-vision to convert finger spelling sign language to text and further enhancing the text predictions with natural language processing.

Andrea is a senior research fellow in Bayesian digital demography at the Demographic Science Unit (DSU) of the Nuffield Department of Population Health, which she joined in 2024. At the DSU, Andrea leads the development of statistical and computational Bayesian methods to estimate and nowcast populations in places affected by war and crisis, supporting international humanitarian response.
Andrea has a PhD and an honorary research fellowship in social statistics from the University of Manchester. She is also accredited as a teaching fellow of the Advance Higher Education Institution. Her research focuses on developing statistical methods that integrate and combine traditional and new forms of data from multiple sources to estimate and forecast demographic events, with an emphasis on migration and mobility. She works primarily within the Bayesian framework, which enables her to correct measurement errors and systematic biases, as well as to impute and smooth out imperfect data.
Before joining Oxford, Andrea worked on various research projects, including the EU-Horizon-2020 funded Future Migration Scenarios for Europe (FUME) initiative, the Internal Migration in Latin America and the Caribbean (MIALC) and the International Migration in Latin America and the Caribbean (IMILA) projects. She also contributed to developing the Evidence for Equality National Survey (EVENS) and the Rapid Assistance in Modelling the Pandemic (RAMP) group at the University of Manchester. Additionally, Andrea worked as an associate lecturer in social statistics at University College London and the National University of Colombia.
