In the late 1800's what started as a settlement of 17 scattered farmhouses, 1.7 square miles, began to grow with the construction of the Philadelphia and Atlantic City Railroad. A land company under the name of Barrington Syndicate later divided a 130 acre farm into building lots. The area slowly grew in population until the trolley service was extended into Haddon Heights in 1903 and further development increased. A group of citizens concerned about protection from fire formed a "bucket brigade" that became known as the Barrington League in 1905 and eventually went on to form and incorporate what is now known as The Barrington Fire Company No. 1 on April 1, 1907... Now, well over a hundred years, The Barrington Fire Company No. 1 continues to be professionally staffed, with the support of the Borough of Barrington and its residents, with volunteers that train and respond to fire related emergencies 24/7 on their own time. Continued focus on embracing new technologies and safer fire..
